Not Today was perhaps the song I wrote most quickly. A friend called me on a Monday morning to ask if I had
any appropriate songs to pitch to a movie in post-production. By Two o'clock that afternoon I had recorded the
demo for this song. The plot of the movie involved drug use, and though this song ended up being far too serious
a song for placement in the movie, it became a song of which I'm extremely proud.
I played the demo for a fellow songwriter, a few months after the song was written, and after listening
intently to the demo, he asked me very bluntly "what is your experience with drug addiction? You're dead on",
at which time he confessed that he had spent months in rehabilitation for drug abuse. My experience with drug addiction
is only through second- or third-hand accounts, but I do understand the power of addictive behaviours, and the difficulty in
making the choice to give them up.
